Vallejo, Solano County
Mare Island, across the strait from downtown Vallejo, became the first Navy shipyard on the West Coast in 1854. Its workers built and repaired hundreds of ships and submarines before the yard closed in 1996. Brick officers' quarters and a chapel with Tiffany windows remain on the island, which is slowly being redeveloped.
